stoicism now

So as I get ready to leave my house I have to pre­pare my­self to lis­ten to every­body com­plain­ing about last year, and say­ing the same old tired phrase

“I hope this year’s bet­ter.”
 

Life is­n’t about cal­en­dars, it is­n’t about days, weeks, months, years.

Life is about evo­lu­tion, and we are tiny lit­tle specs in that evo­lu­tion­ary un­end­ing jour­ney.

This plan­et is not about us, it nev­er was about us and nev­er will be about us.

Quite frankly it doesn’t give a shit about us.
 

So who does give a shit about us?

If we’re lucky, maybe a cou­ple of dozen peo­ple.

Those who would step in front of a bus or run into that burn­ing build­ing.

Every­day when I read an ex­cerpt from The Dai­ly Sto­ic I’m aware of just how much hu­mans have stayed the same over thou­sands of years.

The same com­plaints, the same tri­als and tribu­la­tions, the same joys.
 

Hu­mans have been evolv­ing for over 50,000 years and we are still evolv­ing.

Change is­n’t go­ing to hap­pen be­cause of the flip of a cal­en­dar page, it hap­pens through con­stant tri­al and er­ror.

It hap­pens when evo­lu­tion says,

“Well that did­n’t work, let’s try some­thing new.”
 

Evo­lu­tion is­n’t nec­es­sar­i­ly bi­o­log­i­cal, ge­o­graph­i­cal, or chrono­log­i­cal, it can be in­tel­lec­tu­al and emo­tion­al too.

It’s all up to a species on how it adapts to that change whether it sur­vives or not.

So in oth­er words,

“Shut up and em­brace the mo­ment you’re liv­ing in.”
