Re­al­ly. When did it be­come ac­cept­able that “speak­ing your mind” is just about “say­ing stu­pid, hate­ful shit?”

I speak my mind all the time, which is why con­ver­sa­tions with me are al­ways com­posed of 95% ran­dom movie triv­ia. Speak­ing your mind doesn’t make you in­sight­ful, or not wrong.

Mr. Trump.

The peo­ple who sup­port this brand of straight white dope be­lieve in free speech. BUT, then they are an­gry that when they say their racist, sex­ist, demon­stra­bly wrong things – AND they get called out on it.

They are fu­ri­ous be­cause they per­ceive that they are be­ing re­strict­ed from a priv­i­lege that should au­to­mat­i­cal­ly be­long to them. And emp­ty free speech is just that: Emp­ty.

This is what Trump plays to. Be­cause Trump is mere­ly do­ing a more vi­cious ver­sion of what any giv­en politi­cian would do: He is say­ing what he thinks will get vot­ers into the elec­toral bed. The “mind” he is speak­ing is re­al­ly the book of po­lit­i­cal pick-up lines that changes with every con­quest he pur­sues. Take note, poor Face­book mar­tyrs who want a brave new world where you can drop slurs with­out so­cial con­se­quences: Even though you love what he’s been sell­ing, The Don­ald him­self still wouldn’t spit on you if you were on fire.

So go right ahead. Main­line that straight white dope as pub­licly as pos­si­ble. Just re­mem­ber what Hu­bert Humphrey, an ac­tu­al politi­cian, once said:

“The right to be heard does not au­to­mat­i­cal­ly in­clude the right to be tak­en se­ri­ous­ly.”
