‘high anxiety’

That’s how I spent yes­ter­day morn­ing … watch­ing it.

I start­ed think­ing about all the Mel Brooks movies in the 70s … Then I won­dered what was go­ing on with so­ci­ety at that time when most of my gen­er­a­tion were in our 20s:

Gas cri­sis (peo­ple ac­tu­al­ly got killed over gas)
Women’s move­ment (which tru­ly split Amer­i­ca)
Viet­nam (na­tion­al dis­grace and ‘baby killers’ re­turn­ing home)
Wa­ter­gate (lies, de­ceit, treach­ery)
Cold War (the threat of to­tal de­struc­tion)
Iran (an­oth­er Viet­nam)
Lake Erie and pol­lu­tion fears (lit­er­al­ly caught fire in 1969)
Kent State (stu­dents shot down by our own sol­diers)
Jack­son State killing riot (two black stu­dents killed and dozens wound­ed by po­lice)
The Hard Hat Riot (1000s of con­struc­tion work­ers at­tack stu­dents protest­ing Viet­nam War)
The Black Pan­thers (white peo­ple ter­ri­fied of black up­ris­ing)
Charles Man­son (Sharon Tate mur­ders)
Philadel­phia Gulf re­fin­ery fire (8 fire­fight­ers lost)
Ed­ward Gar­ner killing (led to a 1985 Supreme Court de­ci­sion in the family’s fa­vor that es­tab­lished that po­lice can’t shoot flee­ing sus­pects un­less they pose im­me­di­ate dan­ger)
… and mor.

Are things RE­AL­LY worse?
Or just a lit­tle dif­fer­ent?

Our par­ents went through all that, our par­ents went to bed wor­ry­ing every night while we went to col­lege, par­tied, and got stoned.

Sound fa­mil­iar?

This Na­tion sur­vived all that.
This Na­tion grew from all that.
This Na­tion IS bet­ter for all that.

So … here’s a thought,

KNOW this is tem­po­rary.
KNOW this is nec­es­sary.
KNOW this Na­tion will sur­vive it.
KNOW this World will be bet­ter for us hav­ing gone through it.
