I was a latchkey lad in the 80s who always wanted to know about more adult stuff than his age.
We had the cheapest premium cable channel The Movie Channel and Gloria (1980) was on quite frequently.
So I’m five years old watching Gena Rowlands in a Cassavettes flick like it’s the most normal thing in the world for a kindergartner to do.
I don’t think I “got” it all initially, but I was so precocious that I didn’t care. I would stick with it and watch it again and again until I did.
And for that reason to me, Gena Rowlands was as big a Star as Miss Piggy (again, I was five).
Eventually I would see all her classic other work with Cassavettes and others. Total icon and absolute legend. RIP.
