I have zero opinions whatsoever about the slap felt round the world last night.
I’m more offended by the fact that in a night of many important firsts, the Academy felt that Will Smith deserved an Oscar for portraying a man who obsessively controlled the lives of both his daughters from the moment they were born.
I don’t like Amy Schumer, but she wasn’t wrong when she quipped,
“After years of Hollywood ignoring women’s stories, this year we finally got a movie about the incredible Williams sisters’ … dad.”
In all seriousness though, let’s acknowledge:
· The third woman in 94 years won Best Director.
· A film that explores deaf culture won Best Picture.
· A film that explores black culture won Best Documentary.
· The first queer Afro-Latina won an Oscar.
· The first deaf man and second deaf performer overall won an Oscar.
And let’s not forget this beautiful moment:
I think there’s definitely too much attention paid to celebrity drama in our culture, but at the same time, I also think people focus on what they feel like they can manage.
