Through­out adolescence,
my sketch­books were filled with superheroines. 

Tank girls,
girls with guns … Women in their power. 

Lat­er,
my sense of pow­er be­came subtler,
I de­vel­oped an aes­thet­ic style that em­pha­sizes and ex­ag­ger­ates what I find strong and beau­ti­ful instead. 

                               

But still,
I like the sym­bol­ism of a weapon-wield­ing woman. 

If it’s in her hands,
there’s some­thing sa­cred to be protected. 

It’s not like­ly a pow­er trip
or means of control. 

 

I al­ways say,
if y’all won’t pro­tect us, we’ll pro­tect ourselves.
