In the past couple weeks, two separate people said they think of me as “fearless.”
They’re right and wrong.
I’ve done some bold shit.
Fought in a televised kickboxing match,
defended my work on a national stage against senior authorities,
loved people that others said were “dangerous,”
followed my instincts against all advice and warnings —
I fear no one and nothing —
except my own mind.
I’ve had to learn since childhood how to stay regulated in my own waking consciousness.
I’ve spent some stretches of time so disregulated that I fear waking up in the morning.
I know resistance intimately.
I am not fearless.
I just understand my assignments …
and that gives me something to smile about.
