“In speaking with my 88 yr old mother, who is struggling to be civil to her Trump voting Evangelical sisters, I realized this is how Hitler came to power. By family members, too polite to call out the threat that their family presents to society by supporting a Fascist. That people in Germany knew their Nazi family was crazy, just like we know our family or neighbors, or coworkers, are aligned with a Fascist and yet we don’t shun them, we don’t tell them to their faces or cut them out of our lives. Some do, but it feels like too many normalize Trump and the right’s threat to America and the world. Just like people had to ignore Hitler. And so here we are, people ignoring the actual threat before them because they don’t want to ruffle any feathers during the holidays with family. End rant.”

I do not care what anyone’s motive is for voting for Trump, no matter what it is. I do not care who they are or how “nice” they are or whatever past history I had with them. I do not care about any of that, and neither should you.
I’m sure many people think I’m being unfair, unreasonable, any number of things, because I’m “willing to let politics come between friends and family.” Yes, I am willing to do that. If someone votes for Trump, they are not my friend, and I’m deeply disgusted if they’re family.
I’m also sure many people think I’m being hysterical in my comparison of Trump supporters to Nazis. Well, if you still think that, there’s probably nothing I can say or do at this point to convince you otherwise, except to suggest that you read the books, They Thought They Were Free by Milton Mayer (1955) and It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis (1935).
I have no idea how today will go or what the future holds,
but
I do know that no matter the outcome, the United States of America has a very serious, very dangerous problem on its hands, one that isn’t just going to go away if we somehow manage to end up with the least bad of our current options.
Fascism will continue, and if the fascists don’t get the result they want they are only going to be more emboldened to try again.
Remember 6 January 2021?
And, I’m not being facetious or hyperbolic, and I’m not exaggerating.
Fuck Trump supporters no matter who they are.
