decision 2024: been around this block once already

By fam­i­ly mem­bers, too po­lite to call out the threat that their fam­i­ly presents to so­ci­ety by sup­port­ing a Fas­cist. That peo­ple in Ger­many knew their Nazi fam­i­ly was crazy, just like we know our fam­i­ly or neigh­bors, or cowork­ers, are aligned with a Fas­cist and yet we don’t shun them, we don’t tell them to their faces or cut them out of our lives. Some do, but it feels like too many nor­mal­ize Trump and the right’s threat to Amer­i­ca and the world. Just like peo­ple had to ig­nore Hitler. And so here we are, peo­ple ig­nor­ing the ac­tu­al threat be­fore them be­cause they don’t want to ruf­fle any feath­ers dur­ing the hol­i­days with fam­i­ly. End rant.”

I do not care what anyone’s mo­tive is for vot­ing for Trump, no mat­ter what it is. I do not care who they are or how “nice” they are or what­ev­er past his­to­ry I had with them. I do not care about any of that, and nei­ther should you. 

I’m sure many peo­ple think I’m be­ing un­fair, un­rea­son­able, any num­ber of things, be­cause I’m “will­ing to let pol­i­tics come be­tween friends and fam­i­ly.” Yes, I am will­ing to do that. If some­one votes for Trump, they are not my friend, and I’m deeply dis­gust­ed if they’re family. 

I’m also sure many peo­ple think I’m be­ing hys­ter­i­cal in my com­par­i­son of Trump sup­port­ers to Nazis. Well, if you still think that, there’s prob­a­bly noth­ing I can say or do at this point to con­vince you oth­er­wise, ex­cept to sug­gest that you read the books, They Thought They Were Free by Mil­ton May­er (1955) and It Can’t Hap­pen Here by Sin­clair Lewis (1935).

 

I have no idea how to­day will go or what the fu­ture holds, 

but

I do know that no mat­ter the out­come, the Unit­ed States of Amer­i­ca has a very se­ri­ous, very dan­ger­ous prob­lem on its hands, one that isn’t just go­ing to go away if we some­how man­age to end up with the least bad of our cur­rent options. 

Fas­cism will con­tin­ue, and if the fas­cists don’t get the re­sult they want they are only go­ing to be more em­bold­ened to try again.

And, I’m not be­ing face­tious or hy­per­bol­ic, and I’m not exaggerating. 

Fuck Trump sup­port­ers no mat­ter who they are.
