The cheesiest, least defensible record that means the most.
Something that means something. A record I’ll admit to loving while immediately expecting to have to explain why.
Okay, let’s begin.
Maybe it’s the simple, heart on sleeve lyrics (which I think is more proto emo than some would admit)
Maybe it’s the efficient singalong powerpop crunch (which I’m always a sucker for)
Maybe it was the times
That perfect pre-Dookie summer when everyone was the best friend you ever had and even punk-flavored powerpop stirred a discriminating if small audience of the best people.
Before the dark times. Before Blink 182.
Hard to say,
but to this day the Goo Goo Dolls 1993 unsung classic reaches places no other album quite can for me.
It’s all summer nights and pre-Run dance parties and speeding to a rave in the middle of nowhere with all the windows open listening for the beat so you could find the place.
I’m not even sure fans of this record hear it the way I do and that’s fine. I don’t know how this one would play to fresh ears but to mine it will always be absolutely vital.
No judgment.
Also,
unless I just got a not great one, Impossible Burger is a very reasonable facsimile of a McDonald’s sausage patty that’s been left in a glovebox for a few days.
