Col­in Pow­ell was my first big news meet­ing.

I was sent to pho­to­graph Yo-Yo Ma and he and his wife had come to the show.

I re­mem­ber chat­ting with them briefly and be­ing su­per im­pressed with her hat. It wasn’t a big in­ter­view and the im­ages weren’t even in the fi­nal project edit but talk­ing to him, en­joy­ing the con­ver­sa­tion and re­spect­ing him at my job at a time in my life when I spent week­ends an­gri­ly protest­ing many of the de­ci­sions he was part of mak­ing was a for­ma­tive mo­ment for me.

It was the ex­act mo­ment I re­al­ized that zero sum/all or nothing/good guys vs. bad guys ap­proach­es are of­ten the cause of dis­as­ters and rarely the so­lu­tion to them.

Rest In Peace sir, and thank you for that gift.
