Colin Powell was my first big news meeting.
I was sent to photograph Yo-Yo Ma and he and his wife had come to the show.
I remember chatting with them briefly and being super impressed with her hat. It wasn’t a big interview and the images weren’t even in the final project edit but talking to him, enjoying the conversation and respecting him at my job at a time in my life when I spent weekends angrily protesting many of the decisions he was part of making was a formative moment for me.
It was the exact moment I realized that zero sum/all or nothing/good guys vs. bad guys approaches are often the cause of disasters and rarely the solution to them.
Rest In Peace sir, and thank you for that gift.
