waking with a cloud

To­day I woke
with a rain cloud

in­hab­it­ing my chest,
brew­ing a storm

to be feared
by in­ex­pe­ri­enced trav­el­ers

but to be braved
by the likes of Odysseus
 

Lone­ly
is wak­ing
drenched in sweat
reach­ing in the dark
for the side of the bed
that once held an­oth­er hu­man
but is now piled with pil­lows and sweets

Ter­ri­fy­ing
is the mo­ment
a few months lat­er
when you wake again,
reach­ing into empti­ness.
Ab­sorbed by fear as you re­al­ize
there is a peace­ful­ly sleep­ing hu­man
where the stacks of books used to re­side

Your heart pounds
like the beat of a war­rior drum
as you sit in the dark
and stare long­ing­ly
at this for­eign shape

Thank­ful,
for the cure
to your lone­li­ness.
But care­ful,
not to wake them
in the pres­ence
of your demons
 

The wa­ter in the tub
Is filled to the brim
Not sure if I meant to bathe
Or meant to swim
