twilight 1985

I had a few conversations recently about wat it was like to be alive during any part of THE COLD WAR (1947–91).

And I think it’s kind of hard to get across to anyone who wasn’t around at the time the overall feeling of

•  Boastful superpowers pointing weapons at each other and we just have to put up with it.

•  Our government better know wat the fuck they’re doing.

•  Any moment, you’re dead. Just like The Sopranos ending.

P L U S

•  This Duck and Cover thing is NOT going to work. During school drills as we’d roll into a ball under our desks and at least one kid would say,
“Now I can
kiss my ass
goodbye.”

And I’d wonder if

•  Wes Craven had any thoughts on all this?

Thanks to YouTube profiling me, I just ran across this old episode of the 1980s TWILIGHT ZONE that scared the shit outta me then, and I still have a reaction now –

especially with boastful superpowers today playing with new world-ending weapons.

This was wat 1985 was like,

down to the nuclear family, hair, clothes, vintage coffeemaker and crummy emergency broadcast system:

Bonus: The not-computer-generated GRATEFUL DEAD-scored title sequence still hits its mark. Rod Serling was projected on to smoke for his short cameo.
