A few years back on Vet­er­ans Day I’d men­tioned my dad and his, um, at­tempt to sink a Nazi sub­ma­rine with a pota­to.

This time, we’re in Italy.

It’s WWII and his Mer­chant Ma­rine ship was in port, a typ­i­cal car­go unload/load sit­u­a­tion. And since it’s Italy, might as well find some­place to eat —

Even­tu­al­ly he found a small restau­rant that was open, with a re­al­ly wel­com­ing own­er who was serv­ing the ab­solute best steak he ever had.

Cooked just right, per­fect­ly sea­soned, di­vine­ly ten­der, melt in mouth del­i­ca­cy.

And since they were in port for a bunch of days, he end­ed up eat­ing there every night.

And he rec­om­mend­ed it to the rest of the crew, who would leave ship and give this guy the most busi­ness he had seen in a long time.

The own­er talked about his time grow­ing up in Italy, his fam­i­ly, wine was shared and a great time was had by all.

Fi­nal­ly, they were ready to ship out and my dad felt bad about tak­ing away all the cus­tomers. So he dropped in for one more steak and even­tu­al­ly broke it to the own­er that all his cli­en­ti will be head­ing out in the morn­ing.

But the cheer­ful own­er was cool about the whole thing. Thanked my dad for his pa­tron­age. And said, “Oh that’s okay. We were run­ning out of cats.”
 
 

Dad grabbed him by the col­lar and said, “You do NOT tell any­one else on my ship about this!”
