When our Founding Fathers congregated to decide on our national symbol, Benjamin Franklin wanted The Turkey.
“He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.” (legit written quote by BF)
Thomas Jefferson (who was frenemies with EVERYONE – well documented. Check out the election of 1800) demanded the Eagle.
BF being miffed with TJ, complained to Alexander Hamilton in a letter.
AH, being the mischievous Caribbean pirate/spy that he was, convinced the original colonies to serve during their day of Thanks (which prior to good ol’ Abe declaring it a national holiday to give soldiers in the Civil War a break and thank God, was intended as an agriculturally religious harvest celebration), a Turkey.
While it upset BF to see the bird he once campaigned for as our National bird splayed out amongst a cornucopia and Aunt Gertrude’s fruit cake, it was worth it to see Jefferson’s crinkled, sneering nose. Knowing he, and his countless generations, have to see a turkey on his table every year for the rest of their lives.
This was how tensions began between the North and the South.
