“He speaks his mind.”
Really. When did it become acceptable that “speaking your mind” is just about “saying stupid, hateful shit?”
I speak my mind all the time, which is why conversations with me are always composed of 95% random movie trivia. Speaking your mind doesn’t make you insightful, or not wrong.
Mr. Trump.
The people who support this brand of straight white dope believe in free speech. BUT, then they are angry that when they say their racist, sexist, demonstrably wrong things – AND they get called out on it.
They are furious because they perceive that they are being restricted from a privilege that should automatically belong to them. And empty free speech is just that: Empty.
This is what Trump plays to. Because Trump is merely doing a more vicious version of what any given politician would do: He is saying what he thinks will get voters into the electoral bed. The “mind” he is speaking is really the book of political pick-up lines that changes with every conquest he pursues. Take note, poor Facebook martyrs who want a brave new world where you can drop slurs without social consequences: Even though you love what he’s been selling, The Donald himself still wouldn’t spit on you if you were on fire.
So go right ahead. Mainline that straight white dope as publicly as possible. Just remember what Hubert Humphrey, an actual politician, once said:
“The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously.”
