still bernie

Some­times I won­der what Bernie is feel­ing.

He spent his whole ca­reer fight­ing against the Wash­ing­ton be­he­moth, most­ly alone and rel­a­tive­ly un­known to main­stream Amer­i­ca, then dur­ing a Pres­i­den­tial cam­paign that was pre­dict­ed to stay most­ly on the fringe, sud­den­ly he’s speak­ing to crowds of eas­i­ly 30,000 peo­ple.

That must feel great af­ter a life­time of hard work – not only be rec­og­nized and heard on the na­tion­al stage, but to re­al­ly have peo­ple love your mes­sage.

I’ve been say­ing for years the dif­fer­ence be­tween the mod­ern Left and the New Left of the 60s is lead­er­ship.

We need­ed lead­er­ship to or­ga­nize and mo­bi­lize all of us. That’s what works. With Bernie and peo­ple like De­r­ay McKesson, Ta-Ne­hisi Coates, and Eliz­a­beth War­ren we are fi­nal­ly see­ing the rise of lead­er­ship.

Hope­ful­ly though, they don’t share the same fate as the New Left lead­er­ship.
