nyt: it was all the coach then?

So last Sat­ur­day the NYT gave Katie Ledecky’s male coach 100% of the cred­it for her swim­ming suc­cess, while si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly ob­jec­ti­fy­ing the fuck out of her. And it made me so mad. New York Times. What.

The rea­son I nev­er got into sports, even though I do like ath­leti­cism and com­pe­ti­tion, was be­cause I am a woman and no mat­ter how tal­ent­ed a woman is at a sport she is AL­WAYS con­sid­ered a nov­el­ty.

Sports end­less­ly high­light the dam­ag­ing gen­der di­vi­sions in our so­ci­ety and this round of Olympics is no dif­fer­ent. I gen­uine­ly don’t have the stom­ach for it.

So fuck you NYT, fuck you NBC, fuck you ran­do guy who thinks he knows how bet­ter to ride a bike than an olympian. These women are fuck­ing im­pres­sive ath­letes and they dom­i­nate their cho­sen field, they ab­solute­ly de­serve the same re­spect as male ath­letes.

Misog­y­ny is every­where – though at this point, I can name actresses/directors/producers that are tak­en se­ri­ous­ly for their craft. It’s very per­va­sive in sports.
