So last Saturday the NYT gave Katie Ledecky’s male coach 100% of the credit for her swimming success, while simultaneously objectifying the fuck out of her. And it made me so mad. New York Times. What.
The reason I never got into sports, even though I do like athleticism and competition, was because I am a woman and no matter how talented a woman is at a sport she is ALWAYS considered a novelty.
Sports endlessly highlight the damaging gender divisions in our society and this round of Olympics is no different. I genuinely don’t have the stomach for it.
So fuck you NYT, fuck you NBC, fuck you rando guy who thinks he knows how better to ride a bike than an olympian. These women are fucking impressive athletes and they dominate their chosen field, they absolutely deserve the same respect as male athletes.
Misogyny is everywhere – though at this point, I can name actresses/directors/producers that are taken seriously for their craft. It’s very pervasive in sports.
