“We’re in this movie so I guess we’re in love.”
The most fascinating thing about La La Land (to me) is how a movie that seems engineered in a lab to appeal specifically to me does very little for me.
I am strangely unmoved even though I should love this.
“Has it been an hour and 40 minutes yet? Let’s be in love thanks.”
I think the thing is that it all feels more calculated than truly felt.
Say what you will about Xanadu or The Apple, or even One From the Heart, the people that made those flicks *meant it*
It’s likewise why Moulin Rouge works. This feels like people checking off boxes on a resume, “Hey, we like things like this, maybe we should try to make one.”
Its unfortunate because, again, I should love this.
But there’s nothing here making me feel like there’s a heart and a point of view behind it. It’s, like, a style exercise.
And in every way that La La Land didn’t thrill me, The Founder *is* thrilling me.
I just wish I was seeing what everyone else is since it seems like I should.
