I’ve known Rod Cava­zos for over 20 years. It was serendip­i­ty. Type de­sign­er Steve Mat­te­son hand­ed me a piece of pa­per cov­ered with laser­print­ed font spec­i­mens, a scrib­bled phone num­ber and said,

“You two have to talk.”

This led to years of phone con­ver­sa­tions, then fi­nal­ly meet­ing (didn’t know what we even looked like, just voic­es on the phone be­fore we ac­tu­al­ly met), three mar­riages (to oth­er peo­ple), dis­cus­sions of Psy­cho­log­i­cal Op­er­a­tions, de­sign his­to­ry, man­i­festos, in­sane plays off vo­cab­u­lary, busi­ness de­tai­ly things, type con­fer­ences, The Goi­ter Twins, be­com­ing ed­u­ca­tors, not do­ing things like every­one else, bright col­ors in our places of res­i­dence, mar­ti­nis at Joe’s, Ste­fan Hat­ten­bach, Madon­na, Max, lo­gos, mod­ern art + game apps.

We in­spire each oth­er in many ways. I think of him as the Ma­tisse to my Pi­cas­so, or maybe the oth­er way around (or maybe I shouldn’t be mak­ing such lofty com­par­isons). I love col­lab­o­ra­tion and Rod is some­one I love to love to sim­ply just con­verse with. On projects, on phi­los­o­phy, on life.
