the interaction of yellow: our 423 lineup

Being a FLOMMIST means learning my emersion. It’s saying yes to art forms that you haven’t mastered yet … And we’re all volunteering to make this happen.”
—Louis Hernandez, from the promo for the first FLOMM 423 event, 2016

le TRIPTIQUE de FLOMM PART ONE:
423 YELLOW

NEXT WEEK.
MONDAY NIGHT 23 APRIL 2018.
STARTS AT 6.
AT MYRTLE PRESS in SACRAMENTO.

A SMOLLER VERSION of OUR PAST 423 EVENTS.
IN YELLOW.
Because ITTEN. Because ALBERS.

AND 423 YELLOW is FREE this year.

THEN RED will happen in JUNE.
AND BLUE in SEPTEMBERish.

SHOW UP and jump in. We have a bunch of things planned:

1.   PRINTING
hands on LETTERPRESS, MONOPRINTING + MOR

Explore the craft of printmaking at MYRTLE PRESS. Volunteers will be on hand to get inky and make. In addition to DIXIE LAWS and the Myrtle Press experts, flommist CLAUDIA ORTIZ will be doing prints from LYNDSIE ROSS and ETHAN CAMERON’s personal collection of vintage WOODTYPE and CUTS on classic paper donated by Sacramento’s own MINUTEMAN PRESS. GO ORDER printing from MINUTEMAN, they’re excellent!

Print art, ready to hang once dry!

2.   MAKE ART
live PAINTING and ILLUSTRATION

Join flommists LEE CANAS, CARLO CYPHERS, MATT ROPER, MILK SURFACE, LAURA HOHLWEIN and (of course) ALLEY SCHEFFKI for live art demonstrations AND pick up some pens, pastels, paints (+ pixels) AND join in. Learn a bit about technique or just a lack of technique. See wat marks can be made, just don’t say ‘I can’t draw.’ You’d be surprised wat’s possible in a FLOMMED atmosphere!

Make art, be art, take home art!

3.   WHY YOU USE YELLOW
an overview of YELLOW IN ART

Famous – tho elusive – Dutch Artist MONDAIN has repaired his rift with FLOMM and will be on hand to talk about the colour YELLOW and why he sometimes, but not oftentimes, uses it in his art. We’re hoping he’ll bring examples of his latest pieces, since he hasn’t shown us anything for at least 10 years. He also has a rant involving television instead of streaming.

4.   ENTERTAINMENT
live entertainment, MÚSIK, POETRY, PERFORMANCE ART

Flommist BWARGH VON MODNAR will again be live – backed by EDDIE, ROSE & THE FOREIGN LOCALS – and joining us this year will be Sacramento’s own guerrilla poet laureate ANDRU DEFEYE. Tunes will be spun by KAYLA LE MASTERS a.k.a. LADY FRIGHT.

5.   EAT ART
food IS ART, art IS FOOD

We will have TAMMY of FATSO’S FAMOUSNANA PUDDING on hand with pudding cups for sale;
AND
FRESHER SACRAMENTO just came thru with some baked goods. If you’re local and haven’t sampled FRESHER yet, dooo ittt. (I eat them every week);
THIS IS,
in addition to a spread only FLOMM could do – which will include sweet, savory and sublime.

To keep you fueled while making.

PLUS
WATEVER ELSE
we can think of between now and 6 p.m. on 23 April 2018.

423 YELLOW is organized by (me) STEVE MEHALLO with CLIFF ALLEN, BILL MEAD, ALLEY SCHEFFKI, MILK SURFACE, DIXIE LAWS, KAYLA LE MASTERS, LEE CANAS, RENEE THOMPSON, LOUIS HERNANDEZ, CHRISTINE ZULLO, MONICA ODEH, ALEX TROYAN, and JES DEPREZ.

ALSO, I’ll have a long list of acknowledgements for the other flommists who’ve helped bake the books, mix the colours and get donations.

JOIN US
THRU the secret back door at 625 S Street (enter on the alley between 6th and 7th streets) [zee map] –
here AGAIN is THE INVITE.

The MAGIC that is a 423 event only happens one night at a time. Hope you can make it!

Flommist Steve Mehallo is a graphic designer, illustrator, font designer, educator, foodie and gadfly. He is the creator and founder of FLOMM! Images are from multiple sources related to the 423 participants. Sorta. Mondain sent us the yellow piece and we’re pretty sure it’s not his, but is one of the colour squares made famous by Josef Albers. Lineup subject to last minute change, ILLNESS or cancellation.
