I’ve known Rod Cavazos for over 20 years. It was serendipity. Type designer Steve Matteson handed me a piece of paper covered with laserprinted font specimens, a scribbled phone number and said,
“You two have to talk.”
This led to years of phone conversations, then finally meeting (didn’t know what we even looked like, just voices on the phone before we actually met), three marriages (to other people), discussions of Psychological Operations, design history, manifestos, insane plays off vocabulary, business detaily things, type conferences, The Goiter Twins, becoming educators, not doing things like everyone else, bright colors in our places of residence, martinis at Joe’s, Stefan Hattenbach, Madonna, Max, logos, modern art + game apps.
We inspire each other in many ways. I think of him as the Matisse to my Picasso, or maybe the other way around (or maybe I shouldn’t be making such lofty comparisons). I love collaboration and Rod is someone I love to love to simply just converse with. On projects, on philosophy, on life.
