A queer black artist’s enduring folk song is becoming a modern standard before our eyes and y’all are whining that it’s TOO covered?
Dear lord.
Also,
while the recent cover (which Tracy Chapman herself gave her seal of approval to) became a notable summer hit, if you weren’t around in 1988 when the song in its OG version was MASSIVE then I don’t really need to humor your thinkpieceesque take on who gets to sing what song.
She wrote the kind of song that uses its specific lens to achieve the rare universality that resonates with everybody.
That’s a good thing. Stop gatekeeping things that have nothing to do with you.
