my damn self

Story time: After months of not being able to afford any sort of tech shop repair I finally gathered enough information about this machine as would allow me to fix it my damn self.

Hinges broke away from cheap soft plastic that MSI uses with metal hinges screwed to them to the back plate of the lid/screen assembly. Tiny pieces of plastic everywhere and no way to keep a hinge connected short of crazy epoxy but it took a while for BOTH hinges to go … A wire became exposed because I was still trying to use it and move it around like the laptop it is, and then the wire casing wore down it would cause burning and smoke to emit from that one exposed wire spot.

Everything else about the machine was fine, just unusable as a fire hazard.

NOW I’ve taken it apart 3 times and reapplied some much needed thermal paste while waiting for confirmation of the wire needing replacing from Canada and the screws I’d use to rehinge my hinges from China.

I had to order specific sized sheet metal drill bit and the specific size machine screws the likes of which could only be found in a box of the same size screw at different lengths, pair that with the specific sized machine screw hex nuts for the back.

If I used epoxy, it would become quite an issue if I ever wanted to replace a wire or the screen in the future should anything happen.

Thanks to my G‑Unit for the Amazon shopping help for such specificity. I’m just glad this expensive machine in back in proper working order so I can get back to work.

Here’s the time lapse.
