“The backpack was the target, not the student.”
—bullying incident, Omaha
Good job Burke High School.
Now ableist school bully apologists have a super neat new *logic* to add to such other dismissive gems like “not all men” or “all lives matter.”
I can’t wait to see how this one plays out in our favorite circles:
“The bicycle was the target, not the kid pushed off it.”
“The ball was the target, not the kid’s head it was thrown against.”
“Facebook Messenger was the real target, not the girl slut-shamed into suicide.”
(normally I’d facepalm here but imma headdesk today)
I’m sure had the backpack belonged to the popular able-bodied quarterback and not the vulnerable hearing impaired child, it also would have landed in the toilet.
BECAUSE THOSE FUCKING BACKPACKS, amirite??
Also, if anyone was wondering why we are all endlessly terrible and cannot to make any real social progress *MAYBE, JUST MAYBE* it has to do with the fact that a public school just defended bullies and dismissed the very real pain and suffering of a victim who was targeted because of a minor physical difference even with inarguable proof of the act – that doesn’t sound at all familiar or anything.
Clearly we are still teaching ourselves to be fucking horrible at a young age.
