December 14th is when it all goes down.
The FCC is to vote on net neutrality. If you haven’t signed one of these yet, please please do.
In short, they want to cut up the internet like a fucking Christmas ham and dole it out in carefully portioned sections for a fee, hoping none of us will care that—just a moment ago—we each had an endless supply of free ham to our domes.
Net neutrality means everyone gets access to the same internet.
The opposite of net neutrality means that internet service providers can charge you by the individual sites you use.
In California, we’re kind of used to this bullshit business model, but the effect this has is much more than just an inconvenience.
This vote could mean an end for a lot of small businesses, starving artists, independent developers. Oh, and MOST of what we’re doing with FLOMM too. Not to mention other disadvantaged types who work from home. Who would want to further un-level the field for these people, except for the ones up high enough not to be touched by it?
This is not about political parties; it’s about class discrimination, period.
(and it is much like Prohibition – also about class discrimination; designed to shut down the Millwaukee German beer industry in the 1920s, ’cause we fought their relatives in a war or something.)
I’m pretty sure there are no upsides for anybody, save for the ones who directly profit.
Why would I want to pay more for a shittier version of something? Spoilers: I don’t. No one does.
Anyone you could convince to say that they do, probably doesn’t understand what they’re agreeing to, because literally no one wants this.
It upsets me so much that we’ve been constantly having to fight this shit. Like every year they’re trying to fuck up the internet again. Trying to sneak it on by …
As though I’m just casually not going to notice as a giant stupid obstacle is placed in the way of everything that I want to do.
Anyone who doesn’t support #netneutrality is a literal fucking supervillain.
So
if net neutrality does bomb,
where are we building the darknet and who is helping?
