A col­league of mine once said:

“Drop­ping out of art school is kind of like grad­u­at­ing from it …”

While I would nev­er en­cour­age any­one to drop out of school I do un­der­stand their point.

There is a dog­mat­ic struc­ture in the com­mer­cial world that seems an­ti­thet­i­cal to ex­plo­ration of crafts­man­ship.

I have avoid­ed this struc­ture by be­com­ing a Leiven­custler. It’s Ger­man for an artist who uses lifes as a medi­um.

Don’t wor­ry about com­mer­cial ap­peal. Chase mas­tery with the en­er­gy that so­ci­ety usu­al­ly at­trib­ut­es to youth. Paint and play laser tag. Knit and take karaté.

Place a pre­mi­um on friends, com­mu­ni­ty, & artis­tic growth.

I would like to of­fer my con­tin­ued sup­port and ad­mi­ra­tion for all my col­leagues and fel­low flom­mists. You have all ed­u­cat­ed me far more than any in­sti­tu­tion.
