wat kind of artist?

I heard, “I didn’t know you were THAT kind of artist” a few times this past week.

Cre­ative Di­rec­tor is one of my fa­vorite roles to play.

I love help­ing peo­ple ex­plore and ex­pand a vi­sion, fig­ur­ing out how to make an idea im­pos­si­ble to ig­nore, and then lead­ing a team to bring it to life.

For this ac­ti­va­tion – ti­tled Emp­ty Sets – I led a team that cre­at­ed 29 film pro­duc­tion sil­hou­ettes rep­re­sent­ing the 29.6% de­cline in Cal­i­for­nia film, TV, and sound in­dus­try em­ploy­ment since 2022.

We also worked along­side Un­seen He­roes and The Film Squad to cu­rate 114 set items rep­re­sent­ing 114,000 jobs lost.

The idea was sim­ple: Make the num­bers human.

We want­ed peo­ple to see how many work­ers make the film, TV, and sound ecosys­tem pos­si­ble, es­pe­cial­ly the peo­ple whose names most of us will nev­er know, but whose liveli­hoods are di­rect­ly af­fect­ed by the de­ci­sions be­ing made be­tween Para­mount and the State of Cal­i­for­nia.

Our state­ment wasn’t for or against the merger.

It was a re­minder that be­hind every per­cent­age point, every sta­tis­tic, and every ne­go­ti­a­tion are ac­tu­al peo­ple whose liveli­hoods are part of the stakes.

That’s the kind of work I love making.
