grassroots flomm: the 4.23 lineup

What is FLOMM to me?

textbook answer:     It is the culmination of design history.

Beyond,
it’s me going to a party that I wasn’t invited to and sitting at a table with John Baskerville and George Bickham with Wassily Kandinsky and El Lissitzky sitting at their own table on the other side of the room. I end up at defending my presence by choosing work over sleep.

I’m always going to choose things the hard way. That means learning to make things. Not just design, but build, weld, engrave and print. Print things I’m afraid to say out loud and put on a poster I’ll convince someone to buy.

FLOMM is punk at its best.

It’s evoking the spirit of Marcel Duchamp and pissing off your betters by using a Sharpie in a museum.

Being a FLOMMIST means learning my emersion. It’s saying yes to art forms that you haven’t mastered yet and brushing up on your gold leafing skills because ‘you think you can nail it.’

4.23 is the FLOMM mouvement’s first BIG event in an unexpected place. And we’re all volunteering to make this happen.

Here’s who will be there – and what everyone will be doing:

Ryan1A

1.   RYAN OUZTS
hands on SILKSCREEN WORKSHOP
Ryan is a true craftsman in the sense of what craft is all about. As owner of STOKE PRINTING, Ryan uses techniques that go back to to the ancient guilds. Really. His work looks like butter.

We’ll have shirts and MOR to screen on — your entrance fee pays for this workshop AND you get to take home what you print!

You can also SCREEN our images on YOUR stuff – just bring what you have and we’ll see what’s possible.

Brett

2.   BRETT DeBOER
hands on TYPOGRAPHY MARKMAKING WORKSHOP

Brett runs the Graphic Design program at PACIFIC and has an incredible background in design history. He also once built a full-sized MERZBAU from cardboard. He’ll be presenting an incredible markmaking workshop, just pull up a chair and explore.

mehallo_playdemo

3.   STEVE MEHALLO
FLOMM! THE BATTLE For MODeRN 1923

FLOMM’s own founder will, of course, be demoing the FLOMM game and talking about what’s in store for the upcoming version. If you haven’t already, PLAY the ART HISTORY game app / art project that’s behind all of this.

aaronWinters

4.   AARON WINTERS
rare POSTER EXHIBITION

Aaron has been a friend of FLOMM before FLOMM even existed. He’s a graphic designer, illustrator, an expert in street art, and collected poster artist in his own right AND will have on hand – plus speaking about – his private poster collection.

5.   BILL MEAD
experimental NEW MEDIA

The 4.23 microsite – co-designed by STEVE MEHALLO – is an extension of Bill’s Art, Native to the Web Browser project: ‘can programming lead to art?’ Bill will be going over his use of HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create dynamic art compositions that live – and grow – in your web browser.

Carlo01Carlo02

6.   CARLO CYPHERS
FLommist around town Carlo will be painting and drawing and being Carlo. Because Carlo.

BwarghA

Regular derTung contributor and performance artist at our last FLOMM event – Bwargh will be emceeing the OPEN MIC portion of 4.23AND has helped with the EDIBLE exhibition that will be the FOOD portion of 4.23.

Expect a lineup of FLOMMISTS with things to say:
BLU, RONE, BRITTKNEE, ALLEY SCHEFFKI, and a few MOR. And maybe a special local celebrity guest (working on that part).

Stand up, say stuff, sing karaoke, there’ll be a band:

8.   VANITY NIGHTS

9.   KIMBERLY STONE
Looking for a great tattoo artist? Kimberly has been practicing ink for about 5 years – with a steady hand and incredible lettering skills.

She’ll be selling (bring a deposit) drawn markups at 4.23 – with the actual inking (will take awhile) done later.

Here’s some of her work:
