Beginning the long overdue national healing dialogue about Neighbors (1981).
Is Neighbors genius?
It was released 18 December 1981, the same day as Andy Kaufman’s Heartbeeps.
So maybe one should have just skipped the movies this weekend. Or take an extra joint.
It’s ALSO the same day as Sharky’s Machine. Which I like, but still that’s a fucking bizarre weekend.
I’m not joking when I say this is legitimately fascinating:
And there’s a school of thought that Nothing But Trouble (1991) is the most Aykroyd thing possible by man.
But I think Neighbors has a slight edge.
Doctor Detroit (1983) is also peak Aykroyd. Only the Ayk could have a wish fulfillment power fantasy about being someone so repellant.
You can also claim to love Ghostbusters (1984) (perhaps, but who can truly see inside the human heart) but only a tru superAyk can love Neighbors.
Jason Goad says:
“It’s always weird realizing John Belushi was only 33 when he died … Neighbors movie and Continental Divide made it seem like he was in his 40s.”
That’s some hard living.
