I tend to do random social challenges to see how they shift my life from time to time.
Last year, I took a unofficial sabbatical from taking pictures partially for the reason in this video.
I traveled to two countries taking very little photos and it was amazing to be fully present. It was beautiful interacting with the people and just taking in the days filled with culture, deep blue water and beautiful landscapes.
I used to take so many pictures (not just selfies) to the point where I would come to parties and people expected me to have my DSLR always on hand for a photo opt.
When I got home, I kept the ‘no photo’ challenge going for months to the point where I almost felt uncomfortable being in pictures again.
Rather than fighting to find the right angle on a phone or being upset with people for not smiling on-demand, I found peace in just enjoying the moment.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love photography and selfies from time to time but I have learned that some moments are better to be experienced than to be captured.
