‘every time you wake up in your skin’

This year is the 20th an­niver­sary of a record that meant every­thing to me back when I first moved to Cal­i­for­nia.

In 2000, mu­sic was in a go­daw­ful place gen­er­al­ly.

Be­tween bub­blegum pop, dy­ing alt turn­ing to post grunge, and the scourge of rap rock, there wasn’t a lot to get en­thu­si­as­tic about.

Fail­ure’s Ken An­drews’ side project On gave me life with its (sad­ly) only al­bum: 2000’s Shift­ing Skin.

It was elec­tron­ic while feel­ing or­gan­ic and dark­ly tex­tured with­out feel­ing grim­dark and smart in a sharp way that just wasn’t in style at the time.

I need­ed that, be­ing in a new place alone (for the most part) start­ing my life. There hasn’t been a month since then that I don’t play at least part of this record:
