This year is the 20th anniversary of a record that meant everything to me back when I first moved to California.
In 2000, music was in a godawful place generally.
Between bubblegum pop, dying alt turning to post grunge, and the scourge of rap rock, there wasn’t a lot to get enthusiastic about.
Failure’s Ken Andrews’ side project On gave me life with its (sadly) only album: 2000’s Shifting Skin.
It was electronic while feeling organic and darkly textured without feeling grimdark and smart in a sharp way that just wasn’t in style at the time.
I needed that, being in a new place alone (for the most part) starting my life. There hasn’t been a month since then that I don’t play at least part of this record:
