I like movies because I like stories.
I could give a damn about seeing myself up on screen but that’s very likely due to the fact that as a honkey bro I’ve never even had to try.
Black Panther (2018) was obviously flat out amazing and the real takeaway that even the most strident anti-SJW trolls should be able to get on board with is this:
More kinds of people = more kinds of stories.
That’s a very good thing.
How many stories or different approaches to common stories have we missed out on because the cameras have always been trained squarely on the same stable of skin tones, body types, genders, sexualities etc?
Hopefully the runaway success of Panther will make studios less skittish about opening the bandwidth up to a greater spectrum of viewpoints/experiences and the lesson learned won’t be “people love climactic rhino battles and they are showing it.”
