the quite obvious chernobyl analogy

Did a binge of HBO’s Cher­nobyl mini-se­ries this past week­end.

For the most part it was a true sto­ry with a few al­ter­ations. But the per­son­al­i­ties, the lies, the egos, na­tion­al­ism, the in­no­cents, the ones just do­ing their jobs and the old white guys in pow­er … an anal­o­gy that wasn’t lost on me.

Like any güd work of fic­tion worth watch­ing, Cher­nobyl is just an­oth­er take on stuff that’s go­ing on RIGHT NOW.

Only to­day, the Unit­ed States is the vil­lain. In­stead of one nu­clear pow­er plant, we have mul­ti­ple for-prof­it in­dus­tries and this Cli­mate Change thing we’re stead­fast deny­ing. Cen­sor­ing. And when we wake up, it’ll be the pop­u­la­tions at the far end of the eco­nom­ic scale that’ll pay with their lives first.

Al­ready, ac­tu­al­ly. Start with FLINT and just work your way thru pur­ple wa­ter, our food sup­ply and any com­mu­ni­ty to­day who isn’t as im­por­tant as The Large Cor­po­ra­tion who see poi­soned peo­ple as just an­oth­er way of do­ing busi­ness.

Cher­nobyl is the same fuck­ing sto­ry. Lessons nev­er learned. Fuck­ing cy­cle. Some­times I hate be­ing a his­to­ry teacher. Cause as hu­mans we JUST DON’T learn.

Even the long se­quence show­ing how the Cher­nobyl pets were killed – cept for the bul­lets – pret­ty much the same way our own pets are han­dled when we just give up and drop them off at a kill shel­ter.
