‘… but they were ___’

What’s re­al­ly telling to me when­ev­er some­one com­mits sui­cide,
es­pe­cial­ly some­one fa­mous,
the re­sponse al­ways seems to be

            “… but they were so suc­cess­ful”

            “… but they had a great fam­i­ly”

            “… but they were so beau­ti­ful.”
 

This shows that peo­ple still con­sid­er de­pres­sion,
sui­ci­dal ideations,
and oth­er men­tal ill­ness­es while we are here,
a re­sponse to the cir­cum­stances of life, rather than an ac­tu­al ill­ness.

Men­tal ill­ness can be trig­gered by bad life events, yes,

but also you could have the lit­er­al great­est life on the en­tire plan­et,
but that does mat­ter if your brain has an im­bal­ance of neu­ro­trans­mit­ters be­cause of ge­net­ics,
med­ical con­di­tions, trau­ma,
and the long list of oth­er things that are con­tribut­ing fac­tors to the ill­ness
we are only be­gin­ning to re­al­ly un­der­stand in the med­ical com­mu­ni­ty.
