For now, here’s an edited repost of a post on the FLOMM Facebook page •••
“California State University students are failing or withdrawing at high rates from many courses – including chemistry, calculus, English and U.S. history – prompting renewed efforts for systemwide reform.”

As an arts educator, i see the numbers cited in this article as low compared to where I am teaching right now.
Over the past several years, I’ve found as soon as i add SERIOUS WORK to a course, the students drop in droves.
And i’m pretty sure it’s getting a lot worse than better.
Education reform?
The whole system needs an overhaul – but that is a really scary thing to propose, especially to the powers at the top. Every single student I’ve ever met has had a totally different learning style from the person sitting next to them. Working with that – and some powerful egos – leads to battles. Some won, some lost, many not worth even starting.
My take is students have to own their own education, work with others so they can conclude on their own how important learning is.
And – very important – online learning as it is right now is one opportunity to change the paradigm. New tech, new approach = another opportunity to get the knowledge to stick.
How? Not sure, but I’ve been experimenting with how learning works for over two decades now and I will continue to experiment in my circle of influence until something actually works.
