I love the texture of the low smog in Southern California.
It all looks hand painted with a dropoff that specifically looks scraped with a painters knife. Heavy on top and then fading out almost impressionistically.
And so we love summer songs that sound like summer songs, winter songs that sound like winter, etc.
But the way music production and release works, those songs are most likely made months in advance.
So maybe bro, just maybe, what we think are summer-sounding songs are ACTUALLY winter-sounding songs.
I made a California Groove playlist.
Some of the stuff on it is lost to the ages, like Christopher Cross’ 1979 stuff – which apparently Spotify has nothin to do with – but I still have about 4 and a half hours of it here.
Some of this is Yacht, some is Neo, some is Soft Pop, some veers dangerously close to 1980s Yuppie Chablis Pop but I tried to cull the worst offenders in that regard.
This isn’t the playlist you put on to hear Brandy and Ride Like the Wind. This is the one you reach for when you’ve heard all the Yacht mainstays and you’re ready to drift further out.
Enjoy!
