I went to college in Hawaii. In order to fulfill one of my credit requirements, I took Geography of Japan.
The class taught by this absolutely batshit crazy old white woman who must have gotten tenure back before the pyramids were built or something because I can’t figure out how else she’d be put in a position to teach that class or really any class. She hardly knew anything about the subject compared to what even a marginally qualified person should know in order to teach a college level course about Japan or geography, let alone the geography of Japan.
I lost track of how many ridiculously outrageous and just downright offensive things she said, but one gem I never forgot was when she said something to the effect of how the silver lining to the bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was that it allowed for burgeoning new infrastructure.
Little did I know that at the time, I was getting a fifteen year early sneak preview into the way the people who would become known as Trump supporters think.
