I remember going to a workshop when I was working at the crisis house in Woodland, California.
One of the exercises was similar to what is in this video, only with people from the group:
They split us up into smaller groups of four, with one person facing you, and the other two people on either side of you. You were supposed to have a conversation with the person in front of you while the people beside you were whispering things from a script.
It was the most distracting, difficult, and chilling exercise I have ever done in my life. And while I already had basic empathy for my clients with schizophrenia, after that day I definitely understood them better and was even more patient than usual.
This simulator sounds like a really effective way to help people understand what that’s like. I hope more of these kinds of exercises are put into the mainstream so that instead of stigmatizing the various mental illnesses out there, we can better understand the experience, and help our friends, families, and co-workers who might be struggling.
