A few years back on Veterans Day I’d mentioned my dad and his, um, attempt to sink a Nazi submarine with a potato.
This time, we’re in Italy.
It’s WWII and his Merchant Marine ship was in port, a typical cargo unload/load situation. And since it’s Italy, might as well find someplace to eat —
Eventually he found a small restaurant that was open, with a really welcoming owner who was serving the absolute best steak he ever had.
Cooked just right, perfectly seasoned, divinely tender, melt in mouth delicacy.
Squisito!
And since they were in port for a bunch of days, he ended up eating there every night.
And he recommended it to the rest of the crew, who would leave ship and give this guy the most business he had seen in a long time.
The owner talked about his time growing up in Italy, his family, wine was shared and a great time was had by all.
Finally, they were ready to ship out and my dad felt bad about taking away all the customers. So he dropped in for one more steak and eventually broke it to the owner that all his clienti will be heading out in the morning.
But the cheerful owner was cool about the whole thing. Thanked my dad for his patronage. And said, “Oh that’s okay. We were running out of cats.”
Dad grabbed him by the collar and said, “You do NOT tell anyone else on my ship about this!”

“We even had to go to the next town to get some, we ran out of OUR cats on Tuesday …”
