shall we just let ai make the art?

🚫 Artificial Intelligence-generated art ⁉️

As an artist, I’ve seen a lot of protest against AI works in creators’ communities lately ⛔️

But outside of this circle, I also see people defending the latest progress in the field.

So, what is my personal opinion?

Let’s start with the positives: Before ethics came up, I had fun with the free apps that would generate pictures.

And they nearly always failed. But seeing the randomness presented – and some of the small details from what you have asked it to do – was curious.

For example, the apps that turned your selfies into paintings – they never made me think of them as a threat, because they look more like filters.

Then, there was idea that AI might help with visualizations of ideas a person couldn’t do on their own. This is a big positive on one hand, but could also be seen as bad for artists.

I am referring to both the economical side, and the growth of creators as a whole.

While I am quite sure large companies will – for now – not want to ruin their reputations by using autogenerated ideas instead of real minds, eventually craftsmanship itself will suffer. It usually does. Quick and easy always wins.

But so far, many artists have had their styles sampled by AI software, which can make artists question if their work should be even be posted online at all.

No communication, no consent, AI has become another way around paying artists for their work. Outright shameless stealing. With artists’ income – and motivation – affected.

Developing skills, vision and a style takes years of hard work, experimentation and focus. These factors, along with luck, will determine if one can dedicate themselves to their passion.

However, with a nearly magical AI interface, “art” just happens.

To sum up, machines will never be able to put their soul into art.

Tho – as humans, are we even capable to see that which is spiritual in art – or do we even need to understand it?

I am hoping that inner beauty always finds the hearts that strive for it. ❤️
