“I’m about to pick up a wonderful soul from the airport. He is the headliner of our Thursday show at Colonial Cafe …”
—David Loret de Mola
There are two distinct moments in music discovery that I remember over everything else. The first time I heard Wu-Tang’s Triumph and the first time I heard Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Trenchtown Rock.
Marley said
“One good thing about music … when it hits you feel no pain”
and I knew this to be truer than anything I’d heard up to my life at that point.
Fast forward a couple decades and I’ve been adopted by one of The Wailers and been lucky enough to hear and feel the stories first hand of Trenchtown, the depths that music came from, and what those words meant.
Dr. Devon I. Evans is a master drummer, musicologist, original member of The Wailers, Marcus Garvey People’s Party political candidate, and living revolutionary.
He is coming back to Sacramento for a few days in February and we’ve put together two special nights of performances, a Q&A on the 13th and a performance at a fundraiser for our unhoused neighbors on Valentine’s.
I can’t wait for you all to meet the elder.
Thursday 13 February 2020:
A new take on Valentine’s Day where we love on our community – come share the love for our most marginalized neighbors, for my non-profit EngAGE, Inc., and for our guests at Sac Safe Space for Unhomed Youth.
I promise a legendary night. No date necessary.
Friday 14 February 2020:

#EngagingNeighbors
#LoveThyNeighbor
