And when he was panning
he’d often think of times on the trail,
back when they were a whole family,
including little Moe,
who could get sick at the slightest breeze.
And Maw,
and her ability to cook just about anything that once crawled about,
they’d joke that someday she might even cook little Moe.
And they’d laugh and laugh,
and poke little Moe with a roasting fork.
I think of them often,
as i wander out to the chuck roast on Jay Street,
spoon some buttery potato mash,
grab an extra slab of flank off the flat iron,
read ‘The Daily Bee.’
But they’re all gone now,
it’s just me an that trickling river,
its ongoing promise of those nuggets of ’49.
Maw done took everything in that durn divorce.
