“[Chess Review] had a habit of featuring chess pieces on its covers. The previous occurrence was July 1968 ‘On the Cover where the CR blurb explained that is was from a ‘display of chess sets held at the Brooklyn Museum’”
—Mark Weeks, Chess for All Ages
the rosenwald family was big into chess.
all the men played, and some were very good.
my father, bob was not a ranked player, but should have been – he was excellent.
this is a mockup (can’t find the original now) of one of the many sets he created for chess review magazine covers in the 1960s.
this one was made at cranbrook in 1937. he was 17.
the queens gambit (2020) made me think about all this.
the games in it are real. i like that.
