On February 6, Oakmont High School was on lock down because a student brought a gun to school to sell it to someone. In addition to being a block from my house, it is about a mile and a half from Elijah’s elementary school. This is most likely the school Elijah will go to someday. July 1, Southcenter Mall was locked down, with my Cousin’s wife, and my 15 month old nephew inside because of a shooter. The gun problem is real. You can’t convince me otherwise.
Since becoming a parent my view of the world has changed, a lot. It’s probably a little selfish. Or was it selfish of me to think the way I used to? I am not one to say all guns need to go. I see the value in a hobby, personal protection, even hunting.
But why do we value our right to own superbly overpowered weapons, over life? If we decide that arming everyone is the best course of action, haven’t we just become a society that accepts the idea of “kill or be killed” as our daily reality?
Conservatives will argue for the life of an unborn child, but not the life of a living one. What about my two living children?
There are so many steps before ‘take all the guns’ we can try. And they may not solve the issue completely, but they could help.
Value life, keep an open mind.
