“Gon say this too and get it out the way: Al­ton Ster­ling was con­vict­ed 16 years ago around age 21 for ‘car­nal knowl­edge of a ju­ve­nile.’ He was a reg­is­tered sex of­fend­er. The de­tails of that case have not been made ap­par­ent, tho I would ven­ture that he clear­ly was mess­ing with an un­der­age girl and too old to be do­ing so. But this crime, for which he was ar­rest­ed and con­vict­ed, is only rel­e­vant in so far as the lives of Black women and girls ab­solute­ly mat­ter. Car­nal knowl­edge of a ju­ve­nile is not a cap­i­tal of­fense, nor should it be. And it cer­tain­ly is no jus­ti­fi­ca­tion for mur­der 16 damn years af­ter the fact. And in a world where 20-some­thing white men can run up on, rape and bru­tal­ize un­con­scious women and walk away with 3mos of jail time, what we won’t do is dare en­ter­tain the no­tion that Al­ton Sterling’s his­to­ry of sex­u­al vi­o­lence war­rant­ed a fuck­ing ex­e­cu­tion. That is ab­surd. And broth­ers, take note of the la­bor that sis­ters will now be re­quired to do to ride hard in the streets for this broth­er. We will be re­quired to put aside the fact that he didn’t care for a Black girl’s life in ways he should have. But Al­ton Sterling’s life mat­tered and on that point there can be no equiv­o­ca­tion.”
