Sometimes they let me talk to people. This Thursday is one of those times.
Elizabeth Leonard of the Sacramento Adobe Users Group invited me to stand in front of people and riff about the Bauhaus, its theories, its relevance today and a few other things.
So part of this will involve my BAU course – which I’ve taught at 3 colleges at this point – and blogged about at another point.
AND like FLOMM and the real school itself – Staatliches Bauhaus 1919–33 – constructivist education, abstraction, geometric theories as well as a little rebellion in the classroom will be part of the discussion.
Humans kinda HATE abstraction – and trying NEW THINGS – so when introduced, feathers fly.
Add a ‘Contemporary National Socialist’ to the group (which happened last year), even MOR feathers everywhere. (the kid said calling him a ‘Nazi’ was a ‘racist slur.’)
The ‘Machine Aesthetic’ and the modern theories of the Bauhaus also work great when learning digital drawing tools, such as the béziers of Adobe Illustrator. My BAU lesson plan was also a great fit for a digital illustration course I taught last year. The student finals totally rocked the software.
Soooo, I’ll be covering this stuff, WAT it has to do with FLOMM, 4.23, our new PODCAST and the usual whatever I think of MOR things.
And, as part of my ongoing efforts to challenge myself, I’ll also be doing this talk at the end of a 14 hour day. Probably without sleep the night before. Cause I’m inspired by what comedians do at nightclubs at around midnight. And I’ve been practicing with my history class the same approach this recent semester (LONG ASS DAY, then standup, working on being ‘on’ when I’m totally exhausted), why should this venue be any different?
