Joy, ambition, gain, sadness, regret, loss …
It’s a new year and this leads to analysis.
The truth of all experiences, though, is that they only matter as much as one makes them matter. Typically, of the past year, only the greatest success and the worst agony is remembered. This is the act of a fool in my eyes, because these are actually not what matters most.
It’s the small actions and micro transactions that lead us to our large scale realities. These are nearly imperceptible actions we make every day that erode away the majestic mountain we call life.
Michel Foucault [L’archéologie du savoir] and Friedrich Nietzsche [Untimely Meditations] both argued that we analyze history incorrectly by feeling we should look at it in some disinterested way in order to learn how it all was in the past. They both also argued that the only reason to look into the past is to pull out ideas, concepts, and examples which could help us to lead a better life in our more modern scenarios. I say this applies both on a global macro scale and in a personal micro scale.
Lessons come from microaggressions, the small acts of kindness that adjust the air of the day, the lethargic actions taken to save energy – being conscious of these is a liberating and maddening experience in and of itself.
What this can do is allow one to be fully aware of their every action and intended reactions. Being so aware, one can overanalyze each word, each nonverbal process, every eye movement, it becomes maddening because it is.
I believe the greatest minds all exist in madness of some form or another. The sane mind is unchanging, boring, not interested in altering the world around it. The insane mind is constantly looking for solutions in arenas that others wouldn’t typically consider. And is willing to take risks no sane mind would.
So what I am trying to get across is quite simple: Be insane with your New Years resolution. Live in the madness of a mind seeking to change the world for the better, analyze every action you take and see how life becomes slightly more predictable.
Become the walking meat suit piloted by the deranged grey matter that truly seeks to better the world!
That’s a New Years resolution worth keeping.
